Today’s current word amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos, meaning “without drunkenness”. This is fitting because one of the properties of amethyst is to protect the mind from poison, or to keep the mind sober. This crystal encourages inner strength and inner peace. It helps to relieve stress and enhances understanding.

Because it calms the mind, it is especially helpful for those with obsessive or compulsive behaviors.  This is an excellent crystal for students to carry because it helps with concentration and attentiveness.
As far as ailments it cures, it relieves headaches and fearful feelings. It helps when meditating and brings calm feelings to you. Amethyst has been commonly used to cure insomnia. By putting an amethyst under your pillow, sweet dreams should follow shortly after.

Amethyst has also been used to help treat breathing and blood problems, specifically with the heart and lungs. Amethyst is used for problems in the blood and in breathing problems. Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.
